Lock-Jaw Barbell Collar Questions

Composite/resin collars (PRO, OLYMPIC, Sport, ONE) are lighter, more affordable, and available in the widest range of colors. Metal collars (Flex Metal, Metal, Solid Metal) are heavier, built from aircraft aluminum, and hold up to the most demanding daily commercial use.

Both collar types deliver the same core promise — more clamping force than a standard spring collar — but they trade off differently. Composite/resin collars use a durable resin frame with elastomer pads, keeping unit weight low (as little as 0.25 lbs for the ONE) while still holding through heavy lifts. They're the better fit for most home gyms and general commercial use, and they come in far more color options — useful for matching a facility's branding.

Metal collars step up to aircraft aluminum construction, adding weight and durability at a small premium. They're built for facilities running collars through daily heavy use across many lifters — CrossFit boxes, university weight rooms — where the added durability pays off over years of use. Our best-selling composite pick is the PRO Barbell Collars; our best-selling metal pick is the Flex Metal Barbell Collars with Magnets.

  • Composite/resin: lighter, more affordable, most color options
  • Metal: aircraft aluminum, heavier, built for daily commercial use
  • Both deliver more clamping force than a standard spring collar
  • Best-selling composite pick: PRO Barbell Collars
  • Best-selling metal pick: Flex Metal Barbell Collars with Magnets

Lock-Jaw collars fit three bar diameters: 1" bars (the ONE collar), 1.9" specialty bars (the PRO AXLE, for farmers carry handles, axle bars, and log bars), and 2" Olympic bars (every other collar in the lineup).

Most lifters use 2" Olympic bars, which is why most of the Lock-Jaw lineup — PRO, PRO with Magnets, OLYMPIC, Flex Metal, Metal, Sport, and Solid Metal — is built for that standard. If your gym runs smaller 1" diameter bars (common on older or budget equipment), the ONE collar is purpose-built for that size rather than a downsized 2" collar. If you're using specialty strongman-style equipment — farmers carry handles, axle bars, log bars — the PRO AXLE is sized specifically for 1.9" bars, which a standard Olympic collar won't seat correctly on.

  • 1" bars: ONE collar
  • 1.9" specialty bars (farmers carry, axle, log bars): PRO AXLE collar
  • 2" Olympic bars: PRO, PRO w/ Magnets, OLYMPIC, Flex Metal, Metal, Sport, Solid Metal
  • Check your bar's diameter before ordering — collars are sized, not universal

The PRO, PRO with Magnets, PRO AXLE, and Flex Metal collars use a larger lever with a spring-loaded snap latch for maximum leverage. The OLYMPIC, Metal, and Sport collars use a simpler quick-lock action — press to engage, no lever to flip — for faster operation during frequent load changes.

Both mechanisms deliver more clamping force than a standard spring collar and both are one-handed, hassle-free designs. The lever-latch collars trade a touch of speed for extra leverage and holding power, making them a common pick for heavy compound lifts. The quick-lock collars trade some of that extra leverage for faster on/off cycles, which matters more in circuit training or facilities changing loads constantly throughout the day. Neither is objectively better — it's a speed-vs-leverage tradeoff based on how you train.

  • Lever-latch (PRO family, Flex Metal): more leverage, one motion to lock
  • Quick-lock (OLYMPIC, Metal, Sport): faster engagement, no lever to flip
  • Both deliver more clamping force than a standard spring collar
  • Choice comes down to speed vs leverage preference, not one being better

The PRO with Magnets, Flex Metal with Magnets, and Metal Barbell Collars all have magnets built into both flat faces, letting you park them on any steel rack or rig between sets.

The magnets are a storage convenience, not part of the locking mechanism itself — they simply let a collar stick to a squat rack upright, rig crossbar, or weight tree regardless of which side faces the rack, keeping collars organized and off the floor. If magnetic storage matters to you, look for "with Magnets" in the product name, or the Metal Barbell Collars, which include magnets without it being called out in the title.

  • Magnetic storage: PRO with Magnets, Flex Metal with Magnets, Metal Barbell Collars
  • Magnets on both flat faces — sticks to steel regardless of orientation
  • Convenience feature, separate from the locking mechanism
  • Not every Lock-Jaw collar has this feature — check the product name

Unit weight ranges from 0.25 lbs (ONE collar, for 1" bars) up to 0.85 lbs (Solid Metal "The Machine" collar) per collar. Heavier collars generally mean more durable metal construction; lighter collars are typically composite resin.

Collar weight itself has minimal effect on your lift — it's a rounding error compared to the plates you're loading. What weight really signals is construction: the lightest collars in the lineup (ONE at 0.25 lbs, Sport at 0.7 lbs) are composite resin, while the heaviest (Solid Metal at 0.85 lbs, Flex Metal at 0.75 lbs) are aircraft aluminum. If you want the most durable option for high-volume commercial use, the heavier metal collars are built for that; if minimizing added mass on your bar setup matters, the lighter composite options get the job done without the weight.

  • Lightest: ONE collar at 0.25 lbs (1" bars)
  • Heaviest: Solid Metal "The Machine" at 0.85 lbs
  • Weight roughly tracks construction — metal collars run heavier than composite
  • Collar weight has negligible effect on your actual lift

Lock-Jaw collars are built to commercial-grade standards, but that doesn't mean they're overkill for a home gym — the PRO and OLYMPIC collars are Lock-Jaw's most accessible price points and hold up just as well to home training as they do to a commercial facility.

Every Lock-Jaw collar carries the same commercial-grade construction standard and 1-year warranty, whether it's installed in a university weight room or a garage gym. The difference between collars in the lineup isn't home-vs-commercial — it's material (composite vs metal) and mechanism (lever-latch vs quick-lock). A serious home lifter benefits from the same clamping-force advantage over a spring collar that a commercial facility does; you're simply choosing based on budget, color preference, and whether you want the extra durability of a metal collar for years of consistent use.

  • All Lock-Jaw collars are commercial-grade, home or facility use
  • Same 1-year warranty regardless of setting
  • PRO and OLYMPIC are the most accessible price points
  • Choice comes down to budget and material preference, not use case

Color options vary by collar, from 2 up to 9 — the Sport Collars offer the widest range in the lineup at 9 colors, while the Solid Metal "The Machine" collar ships in 2 standout options.

If color choice matters for your facility branding or personal preference, the Sport Collars (9 colors) and the Flex Metal with Magnets (5 colors, including gold and silver) give you the most to choose from. Most of the lineup sits in the 3-5 color range. Check each product page for the exact current color lineup, since options can vary by collar generation.

  • Widest color range: Sport Collars at 9 options
  • Most of the lineup: 3-5 color options
  • Fewest: Solid Metal "The Machine" at 2 standout colors
  • Check each product page for the current exact lineup

Every Lock-Jaw collar is sold as a pair — one order equips one full barbell with a collar on each end.

If you're outfitting multiple bars for a facility, order one set per barbell. There's no need to double up on individual orders — the listed price already reflects both collars.

  • Sold as a pair — 2 collars per order
  • One order equips one full barbell
  • Listed price includes both collars
  • Facility buyers: order one set per barbell you're outfitting

Lock-Jaw collars range from $18.99 (ONE, for 1" bars) up to $59.99 (Flex Metal with Magnets and Solid Metal "The Machine"), with most 2" Olympic collars falling between $37.99 and $51.99.

Price generally tracks material and features: composite/resin collars at the accessible end (OLYMPIC at $37.99, PRO at $41.99), the same PRO frame with added magnets stepping up to $51.99, and the premium metal collars at the top of the range. If budget is the primary factor, the OLYMPIC or ONE collars deliver Lock-Jaw's core clamping-force advantage at the lowest price points in the lineup.

  • Lowest price: ONE collar at $18.99 (1" bars)
  • Most 2" Olympic collars: $37.99–$51.99
  • Highest price: Flex Metal w/ Magnets & Solid Metal at $59.99
  • Budget-friendly picks: OLYMPIC or ONE collar
